Nursery 2019-2020

Welcome to King David Nursery class. The Nursery team are Mrs Poole and Mrs Byrne with additional support from Miss Holland on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. Mrs Cohen will be teaching Jewish Studies with support from Mrs Halter and Mrs Davis. This will take place every week on a Wednesday morning. We hope your child’s first year in school will be a happy one and we will do everything we can to make this settling-in time as smooth as possible.

If your child has opted for full time, on Fridays Early Years will work together, with a big focus on outdoor learning. All staff are working very closely together to ensure that your child gets the best experience possible out of this experience.

Topic work and planning

Over the next two years, your child will be working within the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. The work will be organized using a topic based approach. You will find details of these topics and themes displayed on the parents’ information board.

Our first half term’s topic will be ”Ourselves”. The role play, art activities, music, mathematics, language work and investigative work will cover such aspects as home, family, the local area, our health and our bodies. Your child’s progress will be assessed using the Foundation Stage Development matters - copies of which can be provided if required. We would appreciate it if you could provide a family photograph to be displayed on our wall in Nursery to help the children to settle in more effectively and for them to talk about their family.

After half-term we will be learning about and meeting people who have important jobs in our community such as Paramedics, Police Officers and Nurses. In our role-play area we will be dressing up as ‘People who Help Us’.

Our school day:

  • The school day starts at 8.50am and the door is locked at 9am. We encourage children to be on time as we start our group time at 9am. If your child is late they must enter school through the school office to obtain a late slip as the register will already be back in the office.
  • After the initial settling-in period, the school day ends at 3.10pm. Please collect your child promptly as it is unsettling for children to be left until last or taken to the office for collection.
  • Children are not allowed to bring toys and colouring pens from home, to avoid any arguments or upset. All equipment is provided for them apart from outdoor clothing.
  • Our main RE extended lesson will be taught by Mrs Cohen, Mrs Halter and Mrs Davis on Wednesdays. During other days of the week, the children will enjoy RE through a dedicated EYFS assembly, prayers, choir and Kiddush assembly. This term, we will focus our learning on the forthcoming Jewish festivals.

Visits linked with this topic will include familiarizing your child with the school and the school grounds. In addition to this we are planning another story night for the children to enjoy, after a great success with it last year. In addition to this we will be taking a trip to the Mac on Monday 28th October to see ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. Details to follow.

Please ensure that your child wears shoes with Velcro fastenings. We want your children to be as independent as possible. This also applies to belts as these can be difficult for your child to undo. Please can you send in a spare set of labelled clothes for your child and we will keep these in school. As the weather gets colder you may wish to send your children in with hats and mittens. We do not allow scarves as they get can get caught in the bike wheels or on the climbing frame. Please ensure all clothes are clearly named.

Health issues

Let us know if your child has any allergies or needs an asthma inhaler in school. You will be required to fill in a medication form in the office. For general infection control in the nursery we need to remind you that if your child has sickness and/or diarrhea, you will need to keep them at home for 48 hours after the cessation of symptoms.

Tissues, kitchen roll and soap

Over the winter children unfortunately can suffer from coughs and colds. Any donations of tissues, kitchen roll, baby wipes or antibacterial soap would be really appreciated.

Dates for your diary

Please note that school ends at 3.10pm Monday to Thursday and 2.15pm on a Friday. School will also finish at 2.15pm on Tuesday 8th October. Please also note that the school will be closed for the following dates- 30th September and the 1st of October, 9th October, 14th and 15th October as well as 21st and 22nd October, due to religious festivals.

We will be holding a phonics workshop for parents later this term. A letter with details will go out soon. In addition to this we will be holding a ‘Language workshop‘ on September 23rd.
