Mrs Owen's group's spellings 15.11.18

Dear parents and children,

Please make sure you work with your child to look up the definitions of the spellings. They have to get the correct word to match the definition, e.g. "Spell 'they're' which is the contracted form of 'they are'." If they spell. 'there' - they will get it wrong as this word is referring to place.

We will mark them together as a group.

As part of a writing homework trial, I have set my group homework to write their spellings in sentences, jokes, recipes or a poem (whatever they like) to show they know the meanings of the spellings given.

Please read chapter 2 of 'How to Trick a Tiger' and identify unknown words using the story context, thinking about the setting and the characters. If your child is still unsure about the meanings, please use a dictionary with your child, a dictionary in book version, an online version or both.

One child claimed to have read all three chapters last week (children were asked to read chapter 1) and they did not know the meanings of the new words they had encountered, how to pronounce them or what had happened in the story itself.

Please take the time to explore the characters, the new settings and the words used to describe them. We are also practising reading different parts: narrator and the characters. You could try this at home, too.

Thank you,

Mrs Owen
